Geothermal Energy and Other Distinctive Energy Sources

Though geothermal energy is the third largest contributor to renewable electricity production, between 1990 and 2000 it did not experience a significant growth in the OECD countries. Its average annual growth rate was 1.2%. Though the region remains the largest producer, with 62.6% of the share in 2000, actually geothermal electricity production declined by 0.5% per annum in OECD North America.

This decline is to be explained by a decrease in the geothermal electricity generation of the United States, which is the largest individual producer. The highest growth rate was experienced in Iceland, where geothermal electricity generation increased by 16.7% annually. For the next few years little growth is projected because there are hardly any development schemes in countries with geothermal potential.
